“The Three on Top”

Keeping you up to date on the technologies of the global agricultural forum; here are three items that have built great reputations in recent years that are now common place in the world.

An unmanned aerial drone

Firstly here’s a blog post on the use of drones for large scale farming; these tools are referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles while others simply call them flying tractors. Rather than be used for military and tactical purposes american business owners and other relevant parties see its use as soon as 2015 for precise fertilizer and pesticide application, thereby avoiding waste.

These drones can also provide valuable data about water, weeds and other aspects on thousands of acres of farm land. With the average land space quite smaller in  developing states just one drone could be used to service numerous small holder farmers.

If you don’t know that the whole world is going crazy over mobile applications, I’d suggest you get up to date a.s.a.p. The majority of the world’s population is enabled with mobile communication technology. Smart phone development is basically rampant.

This trend is being led by African and Asian countries rather than the more common developed states. Apps are everywhere.A great example is Mobile based Extension in North east India (m4agriNEI) seeks to provide timely agri information for small holder producers thereby empowering them.

“m4agriNEI is an innovative mix of mobile and web applications along with Toll Free Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) based farmer specific advisory system. It has mobile interface at front end for the farmers and web interface at the back end for the agricultural experts.”

Lastly, on hig quality service is M Pesa. “M-Pesa (M for mobile, pesa is Swahili for money) is a mobile-phone based money transfer and microfinancing service for Safaricom and Vodacom, the largest mobile network operators in Kenya and Tanzania. Currently the most developed mobile payment system in the world, M-Pesa allows users with a national ID card or passport to deposit, withdraw, and transfer money easily with a mobile device.” This system is based on SMS service simply meaning text messages. Therefore one does not need an advance smart phone to make use of the service. It has become so popular that people are using it to start businesses many in agriculture and help themselves out of poverty.
